IKIGAI

IKIKAI - Ikigai is a Japanese word meaning purpose of life / way of living life.  IKI meaning life and GAI meaning effect.

The concept of Ikigai would help a person to sail through any circumstance - happy /sad / neutral. It is a combination of 4 things. Mentioned below are these 4

1. Work on what you are really passionate about / what you love to do.
Pick up any successful person and he would recommend to take a job which involves work that you love to do.

2.  Work in an area where you are really best at.
Best at something does not necessarily mean passionate about same thing or vice versa. For example, I love playing chess (passion) but I am not best at it. I am good at analyzing numbers does not mean I love doing it.

3. Work what you will be paid for
Imagine getting paid for something which you love to do and you are best it. You could have done it for free as you love to do it but you are getting paid for it.

4. What the world needs

For most people, even meeting the first three criteria (passionate about something, best at it and getting paid for it) is a challenge. As we see many dissatisfied employees throughout our organisations. A person who spends his life even with the first three criteria filled would lead a very happy and satisfactory life.

In the book Good to Great, author Jim Collins researches how good companies transformed themselves into great companies. Before they became great companies, these companies faced extreme challenge and could have been perished easily. However, these companies transformed themselves by focusing on first three criteria and eventually became great companies. These companies were Abbott, Circuit City, Fannie Mae, Gillette, Kimberly Clark, Kroger, Nucor, Philip Morris, Pitney Bowes, Walgreens and Wells Fargo. A portfolio of investment in these companies would be extremely rewarding for an investor (looking in hindsight). However, if any company (or an individual) perceived to be fulfilling  above mentioned criteria can be suitable candidate for further research from an investment point of view.

I hope everyone finds their Ikigai. If not Ikigai, people atleast meet their first three criteria. Even if entire life is spent on just finding your Ikigai, it will life worth living again.
